Rick Nielsen co-founded Cheap Trick in Rockford, Illinois, in the 1970s and served as the band's lead guitarist and principal songwriter, writing songs such as "Surrender" and "I Want You to Want Me" that blended power-pop melody with hard rock. The band's breakthrough came with the live album Cheap Trick at Budokan, recorded in Japan and later a major success in the United States, and their influence on later power-pop and alternative rock artists was recognized with their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016. Nielsen is also known for his onstage showmanship, including his collection of unusual multi-neck guitars and his practice of flinging large numbers of custom picks into the audience, which made his picks a familiar keepsake among Cheap Trick fans.
