Cheap Trick formed in Rockford, Illinois, in the 1970s and became one of the defining American power pop bands, pairing Beatles-influenced melodies with hard rock energy and a sense of humor. Their 1979 album Cheap Trick at Budokan turned them from a cult favorite in Japan into an international success, carried by the live version of "I Want You to Want Me," and the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016. Guitarist and principal songwriter Rick Nielsen became known for his collection of unusual multi-neck guitars and for flinging handfuls of custom picks into the audience during shows, a habit that made his picks a familiar keepsake among the band's fans.
