Def Leppard formed in Sheffield, England, in 1977 and emerged from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal to become one of the most commercially successful hard rock bands of the 1980s, with the multi-platinum albums Pyromania and Hysteria, both produced by Robert John "Mutt" Lange. Their layered vocal harmonies and polished, radio-friendly production shaped the sound of mainstream hard rock during that decade. The band is also known for its perseverance after drummer Rick Allen lost his left arm in a 1984 car accident and returned to performing on a custom electronic kit, and Def Leppard was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.
