Dolly Parton rose from the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee to national prominence on The Porter Wagoner Show in the late 1960s, establishing herself as one of country music's most gifted songwriters with compositions such as "Jolene" and "I Will Always Love You." Her 1977 single "Here You Come Again" became a top-ten pop hit and marked a deliberate crossover into mainstream audiences that drew both new fans and criticism from country traditionalists. The following year she was named Entertainer of the Year by the Country Music Association, and the late 1970s became the period in which she grew from a country star into a widely recognized figure across music, film and popular culture.
