By the late 1970s Eric Clapton had moved from his work with the Yardbirds, Cream and Derek and the Dominos into a relaxed, roots-oriented solo career, and his 1977 album Slowhand produced "Cocaine," "Wonderful Tonight" and "Lay Down Sally." Linda Ronstadt was among the most commercially successful female artists of the decade, known for interpreting material by songwriters across rock, country and pop on albums such as Heart Like a Wheel and Simple Dreams. Both artists helped define the polished, song-centered sound of 1970s rock, and both were later inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, with Clapton honored three times.
