The Jackson Rhoads was developed around 1980 by Grover Jackson and guitarist Randy Rhoads, whose playing on Ozzy Osbourne "Blizzard of Ozz" and "Diary of a Madman" combined classical training with hard rock and influenced a generation of metal guitarists before his death in a plane crash on March 19, 1982. Its offset V design was among the first instruments to carry the Jackson name and helped define the look of the high-performance "superstrat" era of 1980s heavy metal. The later Roswell variant drew on the 1947 reported UFO incident in Roswell, New Mexico, reflecting the Jackson Custom Shop's practice of reworking its established body shapes into limited-run instruments.
