Lou Reed co-founded the Velvet Underground, whose frank songwriting about urban life and experimental approach to sound influenced generations of punk, alternative and art-rock musicians despite modest sales during the band's existence. As a solo artist he reached a wider audience with the 1972 album Transformer, produced by David Bowie and Mick Ronson and featuring "Walk on the Wild Side," and in 1978 he released Street Hassle, which drew on the raw energy of New York's punk scene, a movement that regarded him as a forerunner. Reed was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Velvet Underground in 1996 and as a solo artist in 2015.
