Item Details: Up for auction is a striking, handcrafted wooden bass guitar body featuring a custom checkerboard pattern, sourced directly from the personal collection of original Van Halen bassist and accomplished luthier Mark Stone. This raw, unfinished collectible body includes pre-routed cutouts for pickups and electronics, but features no electronics, back plate, or hardware. Sold strictly as-is and as an unfinished project or display piece, this lot consists of the bass guitar body only.
Provenance / Authenticity: This lot originates directly from the personal collection of Mark Stone, a multi-talented artist who was the original bass player and backing vocalist for Mammoth and Van Halen from 1972 to 1974 and an accomplished luthier. As a foundational figure in the band's legendary early history, Stone performed on their seminal studio demos and extended his creative contributions by designing the iconic original band logo utilized by Mammoth and early Van Halen. Offered directly from his estate, these historic items will be accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity signed by an authorized representative of the Stone estate.
Mark Stone played bass in Mammoth, the Pasadena band led by brothers Eddie and Alex Van Halen in the early 1970s, during the formative period when the group brought in singer David Lee Roth and adopted the Van Halen name. After Stone's departure in 1974, Michael Anthony took over on bass, and the band went on to release its self-titled debut in 1978 and reshape hard rock guitar through Eddie Van Halen's two-handed tapping and his inventive approach to building his own instruments. Van Halen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, and Stone's later work as a luthier connects him to the same hands-on guitar-building culture that Eddie Van Halen helped popularize with his self-assembled "Frankenstrat."
Condition: Good, as-is, unfinished. Some light damage to the rear edges and back and other common signs of age and storage.
