Item Details: Up for auction is a beautifully handmade, custom bass guitar body featuring a gorgeous sunburst paint motif and elegant white binding, sourced directly from the personal collection of original Van Halen bassist and accomplished luthier Mark Stone. This collectible, unfinished body is pre-routed with cutouts for pickups and electronics, but includes no hardware, electronics, or components. Sold strictly as-is and as a collectible with no guarantees, the body may show mild cosmetic dings and wear from long-term storage. This lot includes the unfinished bass guitar body only.
Provenance / Authenticity: This lot originates directly from the personal collection of Mark Stone, a multi-talented artist who was the original bass player and backing vocalist for Mammoth and Van Halen from 1972 to 1974 and an accomplished luthier. As a foundational figure in the band's legendary early history, Stone performed on their seminal studio demos and extended his creative contributions by designing the iconic original band logo utilized by Mammoth and early Van Halen. Offered directly from his estate, these historic items will be accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity signed by an authorized representative of the Stone estate.
Mark Stone was the original bassist in Mammoth, the Pasadena band formed by brothers Eddie and Alex Van Halen that evolved into Van Halen, and he played with the group through its early years on the Southern California club and backyard party circuit before Michael Anthony replaced him in 1974. Van Halen went on to release its debut album in 1978 and became one of the most influential hard rock bands of its era, with Eddie Van Halen's two-handed tapping and self-modified guitars reshaping rock guitar playing. Stone later pursued instrument building, connecting him to the hands-on, customized approach to instruments that became closely associated with the band's sound.
