Pantera, formed in Arlington, Texas, became one of the principal architects of groove metal with the classic lineup of Philip Anselmo, Dimebag Darrell, Vinnie Paul and Rex Brown, beginning with their 1990 major-label debut Cowboys from Hell and the 1992 follow-up Vulgar Display of Power. Their heavily syncopated riffs, down-tuned aggression and Dimebag's inventive guitar work set a template for much of the heavy music that followed, and their 1994 album Far Beyond Driven debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 despite its extreme sound. The band's final studio album, Reinventing the Steel, appeared in 2000 before Pantera broke apart, and any prospect of a reunion of this lineup ended when Dimebag Darrell was killed onstage in December 2004 while performing with Damageplan.
