By 1977 Queen had become one of the leading arena rock bands in Britain and North America, driven by the partnership of Freddie Mercury's theatrical, wide-ranging vocals and Brian May's layered guitar work on the homemade "Red Special" he built with his father. The two were also the band's principal songwriters, with Mercury writing "Bohemian Rhapsody" and May and Mercury contributing "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions," respectively, to the 1977 album News of the World. Their on-stage dynamic helped define Queen's reputation as one of rock's most commanding live acts, a reputation that reached its peak with the band's performance at Live Aid in 1985.
