Freddie Mercury, Queen's lead singer and principal songwriter, combined a wide vocal range with a theatrical stage presence that made the band one of the most popular live acts of the 1970s and 1980s. By 1977 Queen had followed the success of Mercury's "Bohemian Rhapsody" with the album A Day at the Races, and that October released News of the World, whose paired anthems "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions" became fixtures of stadium crowds and sporting events worldwide. Mercury's influence on rock performance endured well beyond his death in 1991, and Queen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.
