John Deacon joined Queen in 1971 and served as the band's bassist alongside Freddie Mercury, Brian May and Roger Taylor through its most commercially successful years, providing a disciplined, melodic low end that anchored the group's elaborate arrangements. He also became a significant songwriter, contributing "You're My Best Friend" to A Night at the Opera and writing "Another One Bites the Dust," whose bass line drove the song to number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1980. In 1977 Queen was among the leading arena acts in Britain and North America, and Deacon remained with the band until withdrawing from music in the late 1990s, following Mercury's death in 1991.
