Formed in Bellevue, Washington, in the early 1980s, Queensrÿche helped shape progressive metal by combining twin-guitar heavy metal with ambitious arrangements and Geoff Tate's operatic vocal range. Their 1988 concept album Operation: Mindcrime is widely regarded as a landmark of the genre, and its follow-up Empire brought the band mainstream success with the hit ballad "Silent Lucidity." In 2012 the band parted ways with Tate and continued with vocalist Todd La Torre, ending a frontman era that had defined the group's sound for three decades.
