Neil Peart joined Rush in 1974 and became both the band's drummer and its principal lyricist, bringing literary and philosophical themes to albums such as 2112, Moving Pictures and Permanent Waves. His precise, compositionally complex playing and expansive kits made him one of the most studied and emulated drummers in rock, and he was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1983. Rush entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013, and Peart's death in January 2020 prompted wide tributes from musicians who cited his influence on progressive rock and on drumming as a whole.
