Neil Peart joined Rush in 1974, just before the release of the band's second album, Fly by Night, and became both its drummer and its principal lyricist, bringing literary and philosophical themes to the Canadian trio's progressive hard rock. Known to fans as "The Professor," Peart was admired for his technical precision, elaborate kits and composed drum parts, and he influenced generations of rock drummers. Rush was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013, and Peart's death in January 2020 brought renewed attention to his contributions to rock drumming and songwriting.
