Offered Here: Santana 1977 UCSB January Concert Poster With COA

Item Details: This is a phenomenal and rare piece of rock history featuring an original January 1977 concert poster for Santana performing live at the UCSB Robertson Gym. Adding immense historical value to this piece is the billing of fellow Bay Area legends Journey as the opening act, making this a true holy grail for fans of the interconnected history between these two iconic bands. Measuring an impressive 17 x 20 1/4 inches, this imposing poster boasts incredible display power and captures a golden era for both Carlos Santana and the early incarnation of Journey. Original, large-format campus concert posters from this period are notoriously difficult to find, making this an incredibly scarce archive of California rock history.

Provenance / Authenticity: This lot originates directly from the personal collection of Mark Stone, a multi-talented artist who was the original bass player and backing vocalist for Mammoth and Van Halen from 1972 to 1974 and an accomplished luthier. As a foundational figure in the band's legendary early history, Stone performed on their seminal studio demos and extended his creative contributions by designing the iconic original band logo utilized by Mammoth and early Van Halen. Offered directly from his estate, these historic items will be accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity signed by an authorized representative of the Stone estate.

Santana emerged from San Francisco's late-1960s scene with a fusion of Latin percussion, blues, and rock, gaining national attention at Woodstock in 1969 and reaching No. 1 on the Billboard album chart with "Abraxas" in 1970. Journey had grown directly out of that circle, formed in 1973 by former Santana guitarist Neal Schon and keyboardist-vocalist Gregg Rolie with manager Herbie Herbert, a former member of Santana's road crew. In its early years Journey played a more jazz-fusion and progressive style before the arrival of vocalist Steve Perry steered it toward the arena rock that brought it mass success, and a shared bill reflects the close ties between two of the Bay Area's most commercially successful rock acts.

Condition: The poster is in fair condition and proudly wears its decades of rock history with heavy, authentic signs of wear, aging, and storage. The perimeter exhibits pronounced edge wear, including various tears and nicks, alongside corner bumps, heavy wear, pin holes, and historic tape residue. Moving slightly inward, staple holes are present near all four corners, and a few extraneous pinholes can be found across the central body of the poster. The piece shows heavy roll creasing throughout with visible surface wear running along the crease lines, as well as general overall paper discoloration. Most notably, there are two large tears measuring 8 inches and 9 inches directly over the central image of Carlos Santana, giving this rare artifact a heavily weathered, authentic vintage aesthetic that tells the story of its real-world survival.
