Formed in Huntington Park, California, in 1981, Slayer became one of the "Big Four" of thrash metal alongside Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax, and their 1986 album Reign in Blood, produced by Rick Rubin, is widely regarded as a defining record of the genre for its speed, aggression and concise intensity. The band won Grammy Awards for "Eyes of the Insane" and "Final Six," and their influence carried into later generations of thrash, death metal and extreme metal. After co-founding guitarist Jeff Hanneman died in 2013, Exodus guitarist Gary Holt joined Tom Araya, Kerry King and returning drummer Paul Bostaph, and that lineup carried Slayer through its later recordings and touring until the band's farewell tour concluded in 2019.
