Paul McCartney's role as bassist, singer and co-writer, with John Lennon, of most of the Beatles' catalog made him one of the central figures of Beatlemania, the fan frenzy that took hold in Britain in 1963 and spread to the United States after the band's February 1964 appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. By April 1964 the Beatles held the top five positions on the Billboard Hot 100, and demand for merchandise grew so quickly that licensed and unlicensed products bearing the members' names and faces flooded the market.
