Formed in Crawley, England, in 1978 and led throughout by singer and guitarist Robert Smith, The Cure emerged from the post-punk era to become one of the defining bands of gothic rock and alternative music, moving between brooding works such as Pornography and Disintegration (1989) and pop-oriented singles like "Just Like Heaven" and "Friday I'm in Love." Bassist Simon Gallup, a near-constant presence alongside Smith since the early 1980s, helped shape the group's dark, melodic sound, which influenced generations of alternative, indie and emo artists. The band's lasting impact was formally recognized with their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.
