Item Details: From the archived collection of celebrated rock photographer Waring Abbott, this diverse archival lot documents a historic 1988 gathering featuring Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, legendary music executive Clive Davis, and other industry notables. Sold with highly valuable transfer rights, the comprehensive mixed-media collection includes 12 original color positive slides, one black-and-white contact sheet, and 31 matching negative frames. While the contact sheet serves as an authentic, production-used working document—exhibiting a cutout, punched holes, and grease pencil markings—all other slides and negatives in the lot remain preserved in very good condition, offering a rare and intimate look at these music icons together.
Provenance / Authenticity: The items in this lot are sourced directly from the personal archives of renowned photojournalist Waring Abbott. Abbott’s iconic imagery has graced the pages of Time, Newsweek, People, Rolling Stone, and countless foreign publications, alongside legendary album covers and photo spreads for KISS, Led Zeppelin, Lou Reed, and Bob Dylan and others.
The Grateful Dead, led musically by guitarists Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir, built one of rock's most devoted followings through constant touring, extended improvisation and a tradition of fans taping and trading their concerts. After years on Warner Bros. and their own independent label, the band signed with Clive Davis's Arista Records in 1977, and that partnership produced their greatest commercial success when "Touch of Grey" from the 1987 album In the Dark reached the Billboard Top 10. Davis, who had earlier run Columbia Records before founding Arista, was among the most influential executives of his era, and the Dead's late-1980s resurgence brought the group to a new generation of listeners and made them one of the top-grossing touring acts in the United States.
