Offered Here: Van Halen 1969-1970 Mark Stone Owned & Worn Jacket & Slacks With COA
Item Details: This is another spectacular, museum-quality rock and roll archive featuring a vintage jacket and slacks ensemble owned and worn by Mark Stone, the original bassist for Van Halen during their formative 1969 to 1970 era. This outfit perfectly captures the bold, theatrical style of the early Southern California rock scene just as the band was establishing its roots. The jacket is a vintage black velour piece by the iconic Landlubber brand, adorned with an all-over gold star pattern, measuring 19 inches from pit to pit with a length of 31 inches. Paired with the jacket is a striking set of silvery synthetic slacks by the vintage Bread and Butter brand, featuring a 28 inch waist and a 29 inch inseam. Artifacts from this precise pre-debut era of Van Halen are exceptionally scarce, making this complete ensemble an invaluable acquisition for serious rock historians and elite music memorabilia collectors. Please keep in mind these are being sold as collectible pieces and not as wearable items.
Provenance / Authenticity: This lot originates directly from the personal collection of Mark Stone, a multi-talented artist who was the original bass player and backing vocalist for Mammoth and Van Halen from 1972 to 1974 and an accomplished luthier. As a foundational figure in the band's legendary early history, Stone performed on their seminal studio demos and extended his creative contributions by designing the iconic original band logo utilized by Mammoth and early Van Halen. Offered directly from his estate, these historic items will be accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity signed by an authorized representative of the Stone estate.
Van Halen grew out of the Pasadena backyard-party and club circuit, where brothers Eddie and Alex Van Halen played as Mammoth with Mark Stone on bass before David Lee Roth joined and the band took the Van Halen name; Michael Anthony replaced Stone in 1974. The group's 1978 self-titled debut on Warner Bros. introduced Eddie Van Halen's two-handed tapping and inventive guitar tone, most famously on "Eruption," and reshaped expectations for rock guitar playing for the following decade. Van Halen became one of the most commercially successful American hard rock bands and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.
Condition: The jacket is in good condition, while the slacks are in fair condition, with both pieces exhibiting authentic signs of wear, aging, and storage from real-world use. The jacket shows typical pile wear to the velour fabric concentrated around the pockets, cuffs, lapels, and collar, while the original gold paint on the star pattern has naturally rubbed off or faded over time. The silvery slacks display overall wear along with heavy discoloration and staining distributed throughout the legs and the seat. Structural notes on the slacks include a 3 inch split along the inseam on the right leg just below the crotch, a 4 inch seam split on the right leg just below the pocket opening, and a matching 5 inch seam split in the same location on the left leg. Additionally, there is noticeable wallet wear present on the left back pocket, adding to the genuine, lived-in rock pedigree of the ensemble.
