Offered Here: Van Halen 1971-1972 Genesis/Mammoth Photographs & Negatives Lot With COA

Item Details: This is an extraordinary, museum-grade archival lot of original rock history documenting the foundational years of Van Halen when they performed under the early monikers of Genesis and Mammoth. This historical collection features two 8 1/2 x 11 inch photographic prints capturing the classic early trio of Edward Van Halen on guitar, Alex Van Halen on drums, and original bassist Mark Stone, accompanied by three rare copies of the corresponding film negatives. Providing a fascinating look into the archival process, the two prints were made at different times; the older print represents an early development with softer contrast, while the second print is a later duplication featuring higher contrast and some extraneous blemishes. Rounding out this incredible lot are two critical pieces of provenance: an original vintage envelope from the Darkroom Workshop located in Pasadena, California, and a handwritten invoice from 1984 detailing the production of prints and negatives directly for Mark Stone. For serious rock historians and elite Van Halen collectors, this archive offers an unparalleled, behind-the-scenes look at the birth of a rock and roll phenomenon. This lot is sold strictly as a photographic collectible lot. There are no transfer of rights with the negatives in this lot. You are purchasing a rock and roll lot of collectibles only.

Provenance / Authenticity: This lot originates directly from the personal collection of Mark Stone, a multi-talented artist who was the original bass player and backing vocalist for Mammoth and Van Halen from 1972 to 1974 and an accomplished luthier. As a foundational figure in the band's legendary early history, Stone performed on their seminal studio demos and extended his creative contributions by designing the iconic original band logo utilized by Mammoth and early Van Halen. Offered directly from his estate, these historic items will be accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity signed by an authorized representative of the Stone estate.

Before becoming Van Halen, brothers Edward and Alex Van Halen played the backyard party and club circuit around Pasadena, California, under the names Genesis and then Mammoth, a period in which the band developed the sound and stage approach that later defined it. After adding David Lee Roth on vocals and Michael Anthony on bass, the group took the Van Halen name and released its self-titled debut on Warner Bros. in 1978, an album that went on to sell more than ten million copies in the United States. Edward Van Halen's two-handed tapping technique, heard prominently on "Eruption," reshaped rock guitar playing for a generation, and the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.

Condition: The entire lot is in good to very good overall condition, showing authentic characteristics of decades of careful preservation and archival handling. The two photographic prints are in good condition, with both prints exhibiting distinct creasing across their surfaces from historical handling, and the older vintage print additionally showing natural age-related softening of contrast and vintage tape residue on the reverse side from historical display. The three film negatives are remarkably well-preserved and remain in very good condition. Both the Pasadena Darkroom Workshop envelope and the handwritten 1984 Mark Stone invoice are in good condition, showing expected folding, surface wear, and natural paper aging that confirms their vintage authenticity. Please note that the items in this lot are sold as collectibles only and do not include any transfer of rights.
