Offered Here: Van Halen 1974 Handwritten Earliest Known Band Blank Contract Mimeograph With COA
Item Details: An incredible window into the business foundations of hard rock royalty, this lot features a vintage 1974 mimeograph document representing the earliest known handwritten band blank contract for Van Halen. Measuring approximately 8 1/2 x 11 inches, this fascinating off-center sheet captures the group in their absolute infancy, establishing formal terms just as they began ascending the Southern California music circuit. Adding an extra layer of intrigue to this remarkable archival piece, the name Edward Van Halen is inscribed at the top of the page in blue pen. This item stands as a crucial foundational document from the very beginning of the band's professional timeline, making it a compelling centerpiece for serious rock historians.
Provenance / Authenticity: This lot originates directly from the personal collection of Mark Stone, a multi-talented artist who was the original bass player and backing vocalist for Mammoth and Van Halen from 1972 to 1974 and an accomplished luthier. As a foundational figure in the band's legendary early history, Stone performed on their seminal studio demos and extended his creative contributions by designing the iconic original band logo utilized by Mammoth and early Van Halen. Offered directly from his estate, these historic items will be accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity signed by an authorized representative of the Stone estate.
Van Halen grew out of Mammoth, the Pasadena band led by brothers Edward and Alex Van Halen, and spent its formative years playing backyard parties, high school dances and Hollywood clubs before producer Ted Templeman helped bring the group to Warner Bros. Records in 1977. Their 1978 self-titled debut introduced Edward Van Halen's two-handed tapping and inventive tone on tracks such as "Eruption," reshaping hard rock guitar playing and influencing a generation of musicians. The band, fronted by David Lee Roth and later Sammy Hagar, became one of the most commercially successful American rock acts of its era and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.
Condition: This vintage mimeograph sheet is in good condition, remaining physically intact while displaying a character-rich patina from decades of preservation. The paper exhibits common, expected signs of aging, discoloration, light handle wear, and standard storage over the last half-century. Please note that while the name Edward Van Halen appears on the document in blue ink, the exact provenance of this specific handwriting cannot be verified, and it is being sold as is.
