Van Halen grew out of the Pasadena band Mammoth, formed by brothers Edward and Alex Van Halen, and spent the mid-1970s building a following through backyard parties and regular sets at Sunset Strip clubs such as Gazzarri's before Warner Bros. signed them in 1977.
