Formed in Pasadena, California, Van Halen became one of the most influential American hard rock bands of the late 1970s and 1980s, pairing Eddie Van Halen's guitar innovations with David Lee Roth's flamboyant stage presence and the harmony-rich rhythm section of Alex Van Halen and Michael Anthony. Their 1978 debut album, featuring the instrumental "Eruption," popularized two-handed tapping and reshaped rock guitar playing for a generation, and the album was later certified diamond in the United States. In 1979 the original lineup released Van Halen II and toured internationally, building the global following that carried the band to its 2007 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
