Alex Van Halen co-founded Van Halen with his brother Eddie in Pasadena, California, and served as the band's drummer from its club days through its final tours, anchoring a lineup that helped define hard rock from the late 1970s onward. His powerful, swinging style, built on large kits and driving double-bass work heard on tracks such as "Hot for Teacher," gave the band's guitar-driven sound its rhythmic foundation across both the David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar eras. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Van Halen in 2007.
