Released in July 1983 on Megaforce Records, Kill 'Em All was Metallica's debut album and is widely credited as one of the records that established thrash metal, pairing the speed and aggression of hardcore punk with the riff-driven approach of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal on songs such as "Seek & Destroy" and "Whiplash." The lineup of James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, who had replaced Dave Mustaine shortly before the recording sessions, and bassist Cliff Burton went on to record Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets before Burton died in a tour bus accident in Sweden in September 1986. Those three albums laid the foundation for Metallica's rise from the underground tape-trading scene to becoming one of the most commercially successful and influential bands in heavy metal history.
