Mötley Crüe formed in Los Angeles in 1981 when bassist Nikki Sixx and drummer Tommy Lee joined guitarist Mick Mars and vocalist Vince Neil, and the band became one of the defining acts of the Sunset Strip hard rock and glam metal scene of the 1980s. Albums such as Shout at the Devil, Girls, Girls, Girls and Dr. Feelgood, which reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200, brought their mix of heavy riffs, theatrical stage production and excess-driven image to a mass audience through MTV and arena touring. The band's story reached a wider audience through their 2001 group memoir The Dirt and its 2019 film adaptation.
