Formed in Bellevue, Washington, in the early 1980s, Queensrÿche became one of the defining bands of progressive metal, pairing Geoff Tate's operatic vocal range with intricate twin-guitar arrangements and ambitious songwriting. Their 1988 concept album Operation: Mindcrime, a narrative of political manipulation and personal disillusionment, is widely regarded as one of the most influential concept records in heavy metal. The band reached a mainstream audience with 1990's Empire and its hit ballad "Silent Lucidity," showing that progressive metal could achieve broad commercial success while helping shape the Pacific Northwest's place in hard rock history.
