Trans-Siberian Orchestra was created in the mid-1990s by producer and composer Paul O'Neill, working with Robert Kinkel and members of the progressive metal band Savatage, to blend hard rock, classical music and narrative rock opera. Its instrumental "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24" became a perennial holiday radio staple, and albums such as Christmas Eve and Other Stories established a new kind of rock-based seasonal music. The group's annual winter tours, staged with elaborate lighting, lasers and pyrotechnics and eventually split into separate touring companies to cover more cities, grew into one of the most consistently successful concert attractions in North America.
